The UAE’s Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Ports Security (ICP) has announced a temporary measure allowing expatriate residents stranded abroad with expired residency visas to re-enter the UAE without obtaining a new entry permit.
The decision covers residents whose residency permits expired on or after February 28, 2026, while they were outside the country. The grace period runs from February 28 to March 31, 2026.
The decision reflects the UAE’s humanitarian approach, aiming to ease residents’ concerns and support their ability to return and contribute to the country’s development.
Eligible residents will be permitted to re-enter the country and regularise their residency status through the relevant official procedures after arrival. No financial penalties related to visa expiration will be applied during this window.
The measure also applies to family members, including dependents and heads of households, whose residency expired while abroad, supporting reunification in line with the UAE’s Year of the Family national initiative.
Who Qualifies
- UAE residency visa expired on or after February 28, 2026
- The resident was outside the UAE at the time of expiry
- Unable to return due to airspace closures or flight suspensions
- Grace period entry window: February 28 – March 31, 2026
What to Do Upon Arrival
Returning residents must regularise their legal status, including Emirates ID renewal and residency registration through official ICP channels after re-entry. No prior application for a new entry permit is needed to board a flight and enter the UAE within the grace period.
My visa and Emirates ID both expired while I was abroad. Can I still board a flight to the UAE?
Yes. Within the February 28 – March 31, 2026 window, you do not need a new entry permit. Present your expired documents to immigration.
Will I be fined for the expired residency?
No financial penalties related to residency expiry will be imposed on eligible residents returning during the grace period.
Does this apply to all visa types?
The ICP announcement broadly covers UAE residency permit holders. Confirm your eligibility for your specific visa category, such as work, family, or other permits, through ICP’s official channels to ensure compliance.
What happens after I arrive? Do I need to renew immediately?
Yes. After re-entry, you must regularise your residency and Emirates ID through ICP’s standard renewal procedures.
Where do I go for updates or to confirm my eligibility?
Follow ICP’s official channels only to ensure accurate information and avoid confusion, reinforcing trust in official guidance.
